We will discuss the next book in our banned book series: “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe.
With an MFA in comics from the California College of the Arts, Kobabe is an illustrator, cartoonist, and author. Kobabe initially wrote Gender Queer in 2019 as a vehicle to come out to family and friends as non-binary. In a 2022 New York Times article Kobabe explains: “There wasn’t this language for it,” said Kobabe, 33, who now uses gender-neutral pronouns (e, eir and em) and doesn’t identify as male or female, “I just thought, I am wanting to come out as non-binary, and I am struggling with how to bring this up in conversation with people.
